October 2004- Today we have no kids, but lots of parents showing up. I am ready to go, there are lots of things I want to say to the parents and have been recently introduced to the Sandwich Model. So that would be good thing then bad thing then good thing, so the parent leaves feeling like their child is accomplishing their goals, even if there are small issues. I will be sitting in on 54 conferences today and I have packets for each parent along with a carefully worded note and their child's assignments. I am super excited.
After the 1st conference:
1. I am only a specialist and see their child once or twice a week- I am talking too much, maybe I will wait in the hall and grab them then.
2. Keep it short and simple.
3. Sitting in the little chairs is not a good idea when wearing a long skirt- I can't stand up.
Woo, lots of stuff to remember, and the most important thing is that people make appointments and do not keep them. I have spent more time talking to other teachers then with parents. Only 40 more conferences to go.
At the end of the day:
1. I am a Kung Fu lifelong learner-need to keep up with paperwork though.
2. I have lots of stuff to learn about parents and communication- keep it short.
3. The weekly phone calls I am making are work intensive but seem to be working for the parents.
